Effective date: 2026-10-17 · Version 2026-10-17

Key points. This short summary is not part of the agreement; the numbered sections below are.

  • WattBuild is an information and planning tool, not a contractor, electrician or financial adviser. Estimates are not quotes.
  • Electrical work can be dangerous. Get a licensed electrician or other qualified professional, and the permits and inspections your project needs.
  • The chat is an AI assistant. It can be wrong, and it can change your project when you ask. Check before you act.
  • You must be 18 or older.

1. Who We Are and Definitions

  • "WattBuild", "we", "us" and "our" mean WattBuild LLC, a Virginia limited liability company (ID 11628147), 225 E Main Street, Unit A, Charlottesville, VA 22902, USA.
  • "Service" means the wattbuild.com website and everything on it, including the calculators, the project workspace, the AI assistant, public projects, templates and forums.
  • "You" means the person using the Service, or the company or other organization on whose behalf that person uses it.
  • "Your content" means anything you add to the Service: projects, designs, photos, chat messages, attached files and forum posts.
  • "Affiliate" means an entity that controls, is controlled by or is under common control with a party, where "control" means ownership of 50% or more of the voting interests.

2. Agreeing to These Terms

These terms are the agreement between you and WattBuild about your use of the Service. Our Privacy Policy explains how we collect and use your personal information.

How you agree. The notice "By continuing you agree to the Terms and acknowledge the Privacy Policy" appears next to the button when you sign in, enter an address in a calculator to start a project, start your first chat, or use a template. By clicking that button, you agree to these terms. If you started using WattBuild another way, or already had an account or guest account when these terms took effect, we ask you to agree on an "I agree" screen when you open your projects. We record the version you agreed to and when.

If you only browse the site without doing any of these, these terms still apply to your use of the Service. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

3. Eligibility

You must be 18 or older to use the Service. The Service is not directed to children.

4. Accounts and Guest Access

  • If you use WattBuild without signing in, we create a guest account tied to your browser. If you clear your cookies or change devices, you may lose access to it, and we may not be able to recover it.
  • When you sign in, your guest projects and chats move into your account. This merge cannot be undone.
  • You are responsible for keeping your account secure and for what happens under it. Tell us at info@wattbuild.com if you think someone else is using it.
  • A project's address is locked once it is set; a different address needs a new project.

5. What WattBuild Is and Is Not

WattBuild is an information and planning tool. WattBuild is not a contractor, installer, electrician, engineer, lender, broker, or financial, tax or legal adviser. Estimates, designs and sizing results are not quotes, not engineering designs, and not a promise of what any product or system will cost, produce or save.

6. Electrical and Safety

Electrical, battery and solar work can kill or seriously injure you and can cause fires and property damage. Consult a licensed electrician or other qualified professional before you design, install or change any electrical work, and get the permits, inspections and utility approvals your project needs. You are responsible for them.

Information on WattBuild, including wire, inverter, battery and system sizing, is for general information only. Electrical codes such as the National Electrical Code (NEC) change between editions, and local authorities and utilities adopt and modify them differently. Safety warnings on calculators and in the AI assistant are reminders, not a complete list of hazards.

7. Financial Disclaimer

Cost, savings, payback, loan and incentive figures are estimates based on assumptions such as electricity rates, rate changes, system production, equipment prices and your inputs. Your actual results will differ. Nothing on WattBuild is financial, tax or legal advice. The federal residential clean energy tax credit (§25D) is not available for systems installed after December 31, 2025. State, local and utility incentives change often; confirm them before you rely on them.

8. The AI Assistant

  • The WattBuild chat is an AI assistant, not a person. It can be wrong or out of date. Check important information before you act on it.
  • When you ask, the assistant can make changes to your project (for example, add devices or change design settings). Review those changes.
  • Your messages and project details are sent to our AI providers (see the Privacy Policy). To use the assistant, you agree before your first chat that your chats may be used to evaluate and improve our AI, as the Privacy Policy describes.
  • By using the assistant you also agree to follow the usage policies of the AI model providers, including Anthropic's Usage Policy and the policies of the model vendors reached through OpenRouter.
  • As between you and WattBuild, we claim no ownership of the assistant's replies to you. Replies may not be unique, and other users may get similar ones.
  • You are responsible for the decisions you make using the assistant's output.

9. Your Content and the Licenses You Give Us

You keep ownership of your content. You give WattBuild these licenses:

  1. To run the Service: a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, copy, process and display your content as needed to provide the Service to you, including through our service providers and AI providers.
  2. Public content: when you make something public (a public project or a forum post), a license to display and distribute it publicly on the Service.
  3. Public designs: designs in a project you publish are released under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license (CC BY 4.0). Anyone may reuse them with credit. Reuse that others have already made continues after you unpublish or delete your account.
  4. Photos: photos you upload stay "all rights reserved" for other users; they are not covered by CC BY 4.0. You give WattBuild only the license in item 1 (and item 2 for photos you make public) to host and show them.
  5. AI improvement: when you agree before your first chat (a condition of using the AI assistant), a license to use your chats from then on to evaluate and improve WattBuild's AI, as described in the Privacy Policy.
  6. Your promise: you confirm you have the rights to the content you add, and that it does not violate anyone else's rights.

The licenses in items 1, 2 and 5 end when you delete the content or your account, except for copies in backups until they expire and content we must keep for legal reasons.

Ideas and feedback. If you send us ideas, suggestions or feedback, we may use them for any purpose without paying you or keeping them confidential.

10. Acceptable Use and Community Rules

You agree not to:

  • break the law or violate anyone's rights, including privacy and intellectual property;
  • post content that is harassing, hateful, sexually explicit, violent, defamatory or misleading, or intimate images of anyone without their consent;
  • post spam, or promote a brand without clearly disclosing any material connection (for example, being paid, being an employee, or receiving free products);
  • post fake reviews or pretend to be someone else;
  • try to break, overload, scrape or get unauthorized access to the Service;
  • try to trick the AI assistant into ignoring its instructions, revealing hidden information, or producing harmful content;
  • use the Service to violate the AI model providers' usage policies or Google's terms.

We may, but are not required to, review, remove or restrict content, or suspend accounts, that we believe in good faith break these terms.

Copyright. If you believe content on WattBuild infringes your copyright, email info@wattbuild.com with: your contact details; the work you believe is infringed; the link to the content; a statement that you believe in good faith the use is not authorized; a statement, under penalty of perjury, that your notice is accurate and that you are the owner or authorized to act for the owner; and your signature. If your content was removed and you believe that was a mistake, you can send us a counter-notice at the same address. We end the accounts of repeat infringers where appropriate.

Non-consensual intimate images. Anyone, including people without a WattBuild account, can ask us to remove an intimate image of them shared without their consent (including AI-generated or altered images). Email info@wattbuild.com with a link to the content and a statement that it shows you and was shared without your consent. We will reply with a request number, remove valid requests and known identical copies within 48 hours, and tell you the outcome.

12. Product Information, Affiliate Links and Rankings

WattBuild shows products from many makers and stores. Prices, specifications and availability come from those makers and stores and may be wrong or out of date; check them with the seller before you buy.

Some product links, including links the AI assistant shows, are affiliate links: we may earn a commission if you buy, at no extra cost to you. Where a product fits your design, we may list products we can link this way first. See Affiliate Links for details.

13. Third-Party Services

WattBuild uses Google Maps features and content. Use of Google Maps features and content is subject to the then-current versions of the Google Maps/Google Earth Additional Terms of Service and the Google Privacy Policy. We may suspend your access if you violate Google's terms.

Sun and weather data come from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and are provided without warranty. Electricity rate data come from OpenEI.

The Service links to third-party sites and products. We are not responsible for third-party sites, products or services.

14. Ending Your Use

You may stop using the Service at any time, and may ask us to delete your account by emailing info@wattbuild.com. We handle these requests manually, within 45 days. The Privacy Policy explains what we delete and what remains (for example, reuse others have already made of your CC BY 4.0 designs).

We may suspend or end your access if you break these terms, including for repeat copyright infringement, if the law requires it, or if we stop offering the Service. If we end your access for a reason other than a breach, we will try to give you notice and a chance to ask for a copy of your data.

Sections 5 to 9, 12 and 15 to 20 continue after your use ends.

15. "AS IS" and "AS AVAILABLE" Disclaimer

The Service is provided "AS IS" and "AS AVAILABLE", with all faults and without warranty of any kind. To the maximum extent permitted by law, WattBuild, its Affiliates, licensors and service providers disclaim all warranties, express, implied or statutory, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, non-infringement, and warranties arising from course of dealing or usage of trade. We do not promise that the Service, its information or its estimates will be accurate, complete, current, uninterrupted, error-free or free of harmful components.

Some jurisdictions do not allow these exclusions, so some of them may not apply to you.

16. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, WattBuild's total liability to you for all claims about the Service is limited to the amount you actually paid us through the Service, or 100 USD if you have not paid us anything. WattBuild and its suppliers are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, including lost profits, lost data, business interruption or loss of privacy, arising from your use of or inability to use the Service, even if advised they were possible.

These limits and exclusions apply except where the law does not allow them, including liability for personal injury or death caused by our negligence, or for fraud, gross negligence or willful misconduct; those claims are not limited by this section. The cap above (including the 100 USD amount) applies to all other claims. Some states do not allow these limits, so they may not apply to you; in those states our liability is limited to the greatest extent the law allows.

17. Your Responsibility to Us

If someone makes a claim against WattBuild because of content you posted or because you misused the Service or broke these terms, you agree to cover WattBuild's reasonable costs of that claim, including reasonable legal fees. This does not apply to the extent the claim was caused by WattBuild. We will tell you about the claim and let you take part in its defense.

18. Your Rights in New Jersey and Other States

Nothing in these terms limits a right that the law of your state does not allow to be limited. If you live in New Jersey, the disclaimer, limitation of liability and indemnity sections apply only to the extent New Jersey law allows, and nothing in these terms limits your rights under the New Jersey Truth-in-Consumer Contract, Warranty and Notice Act.

19. Governing Law and Disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules.

Informal resolution first. Before filing a claim, you and WattBuild each agree to send the other a written notice describing the dispute (to us at info@wattbuild.com) and to try to resolve it informally for 30 days.

Courts. If the dispute is not resolved, it will be decided by the state or federal courts located in Virginia, and you and WattBuild consent to their jurisdiction. Either party may instead bring an individual claim in a small-claims court that has jurisdiction. There is no arbitration agreement in these terms.

20. General

  • U.S. law compliance. You confirm that you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. government embargo and are not on any U.S. government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
  • Whole agreement. These terms, together with the Privacy Policy, are the whole agreement between you and WattBuild about the Service.
  • Assignment. You may not transfer these terms. We may transfer them to a company that takes over the Service.
  • Severability. If any part of these terms is held unenforceable, it will be applied to the greatest extent possible, and the rest remains in effect.
  • Waiver. Our not enforcing a right is not a waiver of it.
  • Language. These terms are written in English. If we provide a translation, the English text controls.

21. Changes to These Terms

We may change these terms. We will post the new version on this page with a new effective date and version, and list the change in section 23. If a change is material, we will tell you in advance where we can, and the next time you open your projects we will ask you to agree to the new terms on an "I agree" screen before you continue. Changes apply going forward only; disputes about events before a change are decided under the terms in effect at the time. If you do not agree to a change, stop using the Service and you may ask us to delete your account.
